About redBus

Like all innovations, redBus too has a very interesting story. All the founders were friends from their student days at BITS Pilani and all of them used to work in Bangalore (Sometime in 2005) with top IT MNCs like IBM, Texas Instruments, Honeywell, etc. Borne out of his own personal experience of not being able to secure a bus ticket to go to his native place during Diwali, one of the founders thought of the possibility of providing consumers the convenience of booking bus ticket over internet. The idea was compelling as, at that time, internet was being voted as a medium people couldn’t do away with.

He shared his thoughts with his friends and all of them were excited about the concept. After the initial discussion with their stakeholders like bus operators, consumers and venture capitalists to gauge how well the concept could do and after getting positive responses, all of them quit their highly paying job and started redBus. TiE Bangalore was their initial mentor and redBus is ever grateful for the highly supportive role played by them.

It was easy to market the concept and it took a few months for things to fall in place. People started using the website and user interface lead the concept spread fast through word of mouth. To cut a long story short, redBus has come a very long way from days of struggle to days of growth. It has the largest number of tie-ups (and growing) with bus operators and a large and satisfied customer base. What started as team of three grew into team of 50 within 9 months. The rest is history. Today, redBus is one of the fastest growing internet companies in India.

redBus was amongst Forbes top 5 startups to watch in 2010. redBus was ranked no#1 amongst the fastest growing companies in India in a survey done by All World Network and was also awarded India’s best internet startup, 2010 by IMAI.
