Dear Sir/Madam,

We have great pleasure to invite you for TiE Kerala Monthly Meeting on Wednesday, 28th Sep’ 11 at IMA House, Kaloor, Kochi from 06:30PM to 08:30PM followed by Networking Dinner. The highlight of the evening will be an Interactive Session with Dr. K. K. George, Chairman, Centre for Socio-economic & Environmental Studies on “Kerala Economy: Growth, Structure, Strength & Weakness with special focus on Entrepreneurship Development”.

The course of economic development of the State of Kerala is closely related to its location, climate and topography. In a way, Kerala’s unique pattern of development and its population profile are products of its history as much as of its geography. The location of the region on the Arabian Sea coast permitted trading and cultural relations with outside world. Entrepreneurship development experience of Kerala is often portrayed as a paradox of social development despite economic stagnation or slow growth of its economy.

The presentation by Dr. K. K. George and subsequent discussions on “Kerala Economy: Growth, Structure, Strength & Weakness with Focus on Entrepreneurial Development” will be based on a paper of the same title authored by him. Dr. George will make an attempt to track the course of economic development of Kerala right from early historic period till date and highlight various phases viz the initial Steady Growth of the 50s after the State was formed, followed by a prolonged Slack Period (till 1986-87) and the Turnaround of early 90s after Globalization. The discussions will highlight the following:-

(a) Evolution of Kerala Economy- “A Historical Perspective”
(b) Characteristics of the Economy and the Social Changes in State Income and Employment.
(c) Weaknesses like Unemployment, Over Dependence on External Markets, Degradation of the Environment, etc
(d) Potential for Faster Economic Growth.
(e) Need for change in the Mindset of the People, Government, Political Parties, Civil Society and the Media
